Backstory: June 2007.
I am looking cheerful because I have won the £10,000 Dorling Kindersley Travel "dreamtrip" prize. It is going to take me and my wife Pam and daughter Joby to places we have often said we would like to visit, and some places we never thought we would see. I have just written High Times at the Hotel Bristol, a book of 20 short stories based on extraordinary things that have happened in some of the scores of hotels around the world that have this name, but I have never stayed in one. I hope to do so now. First stop, though, is Moscow & St Petersburg to catch the sleepless "white nights", then Istanbul for the Biennale, a Nile Cruise at the start of the cooler season, and Christmas shopping in New York. For early 2008 maybe Sicily when the almonds are in blossom and Salonica and the Pindos hills for spring flowers, or maybe Odessa, Yalta, Trebizond and the Black Sea. Trips are being booked through North South Travel. I'll pass on tips along the way. It's time for some fun.

Please can I see more of your sketchbooks. they are wonderful. You have a very good eye. I'd like to talk about the difference between written diaries and visual ones.
